The Telecom Geniuses

In today's changing world of telecommunications and technology, we must quickly adapt to speed. Today getting information faster and more effectively means more profits. Therefore, it is imperative that we first understand the importance of technology and how speed and efficiency can ultimately affect our bottom line.

DSL
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a method of sending and receiving information mostly through the internet. This information travels from point to point a lot more quickly than through regular phone lines, and a lot less cheaper than using T-1 service. This is a perfect fit for small to large businesses that need to access information and deliver information more quickly. The only downside is that DSL is for the most part distance sensitive. When you are outside a three-mile radius then speed of the service becomes a problem, and so carriers usually will not offer the service.

ISDN
Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) is a public standard sending voice, data or packets over the public switched telephone network. It is a dial up service, but a version of ISDN stays connected is available as well. This is called Always On/Direct ISDN. Telephone companies also charge usage fees by per minute or flat rates for a set of minutes each month. This is a good application when you cannot get DSL in your area.

T-1's
T-1 service allows 24 voice or data calls on two pairs of copper, fiber, infrared or microwave. When T-1's became first available to businesses in the early 80's, only large corporation could afford to use. Now it is a common service used by both small and large businesses. The use of multiple T-1's such as T-3' s (28 T-1's) are also common in large organizations for multiple tasks. T-1's are more expensive than DSL, but depending on the application a company may need the use of T-1 service.

Frame Relay
Frame Relay is a network access service by which a local or long-distance runs a shared network by multiple users.
This is a virtual or private network, which is used as an alternative to building one's own private network. Frame Relay is best used by companies with multiple locations and those that need to communicate private information with other companies.

ATM
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a high speed switching service capable of carrying voice, data video and multimedia images. This service is mainly used in network service provider networks. However, large companies can also use this application as well. The key to this service is that it enables providers and end users to carry multiple types of traffic without building separate networks for voice, video and data communications.
